Vazbu there is / there are používáme, když říkáme, že někde něco existuje nebo se nachází. Česky ji často přeložíme slovem „je“ nebo „jsou“.

1. There is: jedna věc

There is používáme pro jednu věc. V mluvené angličtině často uslyšíš zkrácené there's.

There is a shop near my house. – U mého domu je obchod.

2. There are: více věcí

There are používáme pro více věcí.

There are two chairs in the room. – V pokoji jsou dvě židle.

3. Zápor

Stačí přidat not: There isn't a bus today. nebo There aren't any cookies.

Any zde znamená „žádné“: There aren't any people here.

4. Otázka

Sloveso dáme na začátek: Is there a problem? / Are there any questions?

Krátká odpověď: Yes, there is. / No, there aren't.

Rychlá pomůcka: Jedna věc = there is. Dvě a více věcí = there are.
