Francis Halzen is a Belgian-born physicist.
Francis Halzen je fyzik belgického původu.
He was born on 23 March 1944 in Tienen, Belgium.
Narodil se 23. března 1944 v Tienenu v Belgii.
He studied physics at the Catholic University of Leuven, where he received his master’s degree and later his PhD.
Studoval fyziku na Katolické univerzitě v Lovani, kde získal magisterský titul a později doktorát.
After working for a short time at CERN in Switzerland, he moved to the United States.
Since 1972 he has been a professor at the University of Wisconsin–Madison.
Halzen is best known for his work on neutrinos, tiny particles that travel through space and almost never interact with matter.
In the late 1980s he had the idea of using the clear ice at the South Pole as a giant detector.
This idea led to the construction of the IceCube Neutrino Observatory, a huge instrument buried deep in the Antarctic ice.
Tento nápad vedl ke stavbě neutrinové observatoře IceCube, obřího přístroje pohřbeného hluboko v antarktickém ledu.
IceCube has detected high-energy neutrinos that come from distant places in the universe, such as active galaxies and the region around black holes.
In 2026, Francis Halzen received the Nobel Prize in Physics.
V roce 2026 získal Francis Halzen Nobelovu cenu za fyziku.
The prize was given to him for his decisive contributions to the IceCube Neutrino Observatory and for the discovery of high-energy neutrinos of astrophysical origin.
His work has opened a completely new way of observing the universe and has helped scientists understand some of the most powerful events in space.
